Guess what? Less than 30% of how we age is due to our genetic make up. Some biologists feel that only 5% of all age-related changes are due to the genes that tell our cells how to work. Here is the key to why this is true. We have the ability to repair damaged and worn out parts. In fact each day we replace 300 billion cells. It is our choice to make the new cells better than the old cells or accept inferior replacements.

Most of us accept inferior replacement cells. WHY???

The main reason is most of us were smart enough to learn everything that was important by the time we were twelve. Seriously. Kids are active, parents are sedentary. We learned that we grow up and then get old. Most of us were taught to ignore the getting old part. We pretend it just isn't happening. We gradually change our daily routine until one day we wake up and realize we've become our grandparents.

No longer able to reach the top shelf in the kitchen because our shoulders are too stiff, we buy a stool. We rarely use the stool because we become a bit unstable and are fearful of falling off and breaking one of our age-weakened hips or stiffened shoulders. We find new medical specialists to help us with routine tasks like trimming our own toenails because our hips, back or knees and shoulders are too stiff to reach over our expanding belly anymore. We know we need more exercise, but it just doesn't work. Our joints hurt too much or our muscles stay sore, and we just don't seem lose the weight like we used to. Parts just start to wear out after so many years just like a car. What a drag it is growing old! That's what we've been taught.

Our bodies don't function like they did when we were twelve. It's time to learn how to take care of a mature body. Concepts like glycation, collagen synthesis, anti-oxidants, proteolytic enzymes, adrenal function, stress, exercise are all under our direct control. Anti aging; i.e., aging gracefully is more fully understood now than ever. There is no magic pill or powder. It isn't a mysterious process. It does take time and some effort, but for about an hour a week it is possible to be in the best shape of your life.
